If you’re a business owner trying to improve your marketing, you should pay attention to story structure.
Why?
Well, let’s use a movie as an example.
Most successful movies follow an age-old story framework, where the viewer is captivated because they so relate to the hero.
They stop daydreaming and almost become the lead character. And the lead character is typically on a journey with a big, fat problem to overcome. This problem is what engages the audience because they identify with it.
The hero (Luke Skywalker, Danielson, Neo) needs a guide (Yoda, Mr. Miyagi, Morpheus) to get past this problem and save the day.
Your customer is the hero.
You are the guide.
That is it.
If you work to be the guide for your customer and help them overcome a problem, your marketing will be so much more effective.
You will start turning strangers into customers and your business will thrive.
I make it sound easy, but it really is.
Look at your current marketing and ask the following…
- Have I defined who my ideal customer is?
- Have I clearly defined their problem?
- Have I created marketing that tells said customer exactly how I will fix their problem?
- Does my marketing clearly and concisely tell them what I do, how I will help them, and what they need to do to get it?
If your marketing makes your company the star, it doesn’t work as well.
If your marketing focuses on your ideal customer, how you will guide and transform them, and how your products and/or services will help them win, you’ll both win in the end.
And this win-win situation is exactly how you should frame your brand. Basically follow the three rules of business storytelling.
